Food Spot: Restaurant Hup Soon
It has never failed to amaze me that some of the most delicious foods are found in unhygienic-looking places, namely the everyday coffee shop. This is the case with Restaurant Hup Soon. Located next door to the Shell petrol station in SS3, Restaurant Hup Soon is your regular coffee shop with many stalls placed throughout the shop. Of the available stalls, two deserves special mention.
Firstly, the Fried Rice Stall, and mind you, this is no ordinary fried rice. While it is common to find good char kuey teow, but how about fried rice the char kuey teow way? Fried with eggs and bean sprouts, and done on a big wok over high heat, the aroma is wonderfully preserved in the rice, thus making it a great dish even though eaten without any side dishes. It is priced at RM4 for the large plate and RM3 for the smaller one. For an additional 50 cents, you may add an egg too (disclaimer: prices may change due to inflation).
The other great stall worth mentioning is the Wan Tan Mee Stall. Being a fan of wan tan mee, I have often been disappointed at the quality of the noodles that I get at most restaurants/coffee shops. More often than not, the noodles are (perhaps) too dry, too salty, not salty enough or just plain bland. Other times, you get your noodles with a few miserable pieces of vegetables and two tiny wontons in a soup of bowl filled with MSG and pepper. If you request for char siew with your noodles, chances are, the char siew served to you are the artificially red-colored meats. However, this stall at Restaurant Hup Soon makes excellent noodles with a small bowl of three wontons and fresh vegetables as well as the best char siew in town. Homemade and delicious, the char siew is brown in color (giving hints that it is homemade and free from artificial colorings) and succulent. The noodles are well-flavored with the right amount of garnishing, sauce and condiments.
A large plate cost only RM3 and you've got to come early during lunch hours or you will find the char siew all gone in a jiffy. However, if noodles aren't to your liking, there are always other things to eat there.
