Food Spot: Restaurant Hup Yick
Foochow fare is a rarity in the Klang Valley (an area tha includes Kuala Lumpur and the adjoining areas in the state of Selangor). This is the reason why Hup Yick is such a unique restaurant. Located in Yew Road, it serves the best Foochow fish balls, Foochow red wine noodles and Foochow yanpi.
Foochow yanpi is actually a substitution for dumpling skin. The difference between the two is that the yanpi skin is thinner, smoother and made out of lean pork to bring out the delicious taste. The Foochow red wine noodles (otherwise known as Tai Ping noodles) is a soup-based noodles in which the soup is red in color and is made of rice wine and red corn. There are no artificial preservatives in the food at all. You must try the Foochow red wine noodles because it is normally available during festive seasons only, but thanks to Hup Yick, we can now enjoy these noodles any time we like.
Hup Yick also made famous the Foochow fish ball noodles. Available in a dry or soup version, the fish balls are made of shirocentrus fish and tow foo fish. The sizes of the fishballs are big, about double or triple the size of our regular ones. Best of all, there are minced meat stuffing in the fish ball that makes the first bite absolutely delightful!
My only complain is finding a parking spot at this restaurant. The road in front of this old shoplot is very busy most times of the day, and there is no legal parking in front of it. What most people do is to simply park their cars by the road side and run in for a quick bite. It is worth it.
