Although Tokyo is a high-tech metropolis among the world's most modern, old-world adornments like these softly-lit paper lanterns are as much a part of the city as its glass-and-steel skyscrapers.

Thailand celebrates King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60th year on the throne. More than 2,000 chanting oarsmen paddle glittering longtail boats before the world's royalty and tens of thousands of spectators as part of the celebrations. King Bhumibol Adulyadej and his family watched the twilight procession from the balcony of the royal Thai naval headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand, together with royals from 25 nations, including Japan's Emperor Akihito and Spain's Queen Sofia.
